It builds its nest in tree hollows or between boulders and lives on a diet of insects and other small invertebrates that it finds in animal droppings. When excited, the hoopoe turns its plume upside down. Conversely, when it is protecting itself from birds of prey, it lies flat on the ground and spreads its wings so as not to be perceived as a bird.
