Garden jobs
Garden jobs of the season
Small jobs, big enjoyment. This is what you can do now, and what your garden gives back. Making coffee does not count as a job, but is allowed.
The times apply to people who do not stop to chat with the neighbour over the hedge. For everyone else it takes a bit longer.
Sowing season: lay the foundation
What you sow, plant and hang up now, you enjoy for the rest of the year. The weeds know that too, so be early.
| Job | What you get back | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Sow your first vegetables | Radishes and lettuce from your own soil | a Saturday morning |
| Start seedlings on a propagation table | Weeks ahead of the cold soil | an hour |
| Hang up an insect hotel | Pollinators for your flowers and fruit | ten minutes |
| Throw a few seed bombs | A flower strip without digging | five minutes |
| Set up a rain barrel | Free water for the dry months | an afternoon |
Harvest time: now you may sit down
The courgettes grow faster than you can give them away. Make sure your plants survive the heat and that you enjoy them, preferably in the shade.
| Job | What you get back | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Water in time | Plants that survive a heatwave | a quarter of an hour each morning |
| Put out a bird bath | Bathing sparrows as a free show | five minutes |
| A spot in the shade | Lunch outside without burning | ten minutes |
| Light the barbecue | Evenings that get longer by themselves | an evening |
| Cooling in your own garden | Holiday feeling without the traffic jam | an afternoon |
Autumn: work now, show off in spring
The garden slowly goes into rest mode. What you do now, you notice in winter in the birds and in spring in your soil.
| Job | What you get back | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Hang up a bird feeder | Daily visits from tits and robins | ten minutes |
| Hang a nest box now | A place to sleep in winter, a nest in spring | a quarter of an hour |
| Compost leaves and clippings | Free rich soil for next year | an afternoon of raking |
| A hedgehog house in a quiet corner | A permanent tenant until spring | ten minutes |
| A fire basket on the terrace | Longer outside, even when it gets colder | an evening |
| Winterise the rain barrel | No frost damage, full again in spring | a quarter of an hour |
Winter: your garden rests, you plan ahead
It is quiet outside, but not empty. Help those who stayed through the winter and start planning for the new season.
| Job | What you get back | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Feed the birds | Life in the garden on the greyest days | a moment every morning |
| Keep de-icing salt at hand | Safe over path and driveway | five minutes |
| Prune fruit trees | Stronger growth and more fruit | an afternoon |
| Store firewood dry | A fire that burns instead of smoking | an afternoon |
| Pick a greenhouse now | Spring starts earlier under glass | an evening of comparing |
