During the day, the little owls hide and sleep and become active at dusk and night. They nest in a natural environment in tree hollows and caves. As these nesting sites are becoming increasingly scarce, this little owl box is an excellent alternative for these birds, which can grow up to 23 cm, to nest. The small area at the front of the nest box is used for the chicks when feeding. Choose an undisturbed spot on a tree trunk at a height of 3 to 5 metres to mount the little owl box. Place the nest box in a part of the tree where the leaves are not too dense, so that the owls can easily reach the nest box. Make sure that the flight hole faces south to southeast, otherwise rain can get in. Choose a shady spot for the little owl box to prevent heat from building up during the summer. Install the nest box at a slight angle of about 5° to the back. Little owls like to use other nest boxes at the same time as a pantry or in case of danger. Every two to three years, the nest box can be cleaned between October and December.
