Kestrel Box
Omschrijving
Our natural wood kestrel nest box is designed to provide a safe place for kestrels to breed and raise their young. The kestrel is our most famous soaring bird of prey and has recently declined. It is most commonly seen hunting on the grass edges of motorways and farmlands in search of its favourite prey, the vole. Handmade from solid FSC certified timber in our Gloucestershire workshops Slow seasoned timber eliminates the need for chemicals, stains or artificial preservatives Lightweight but durable Two recycled plastic side supports Integral side bar for adults and juveniles to exercise their wings Supplied with a camera clip if you choose to monitor the nest box Positioning The box should be mounted at least 5m high, preferably with a clear flight path to the box. A pole can be used if a tree is not available. Kestrels are less likely to be hit by traffic than species such as Barn Owls, so a position near light traffic is acceptable if other locations are not available. The box should ideally face east or NE/SE. The presence of insect rich rough grassland which supports voles will greatly increase the likelihood of occupancy. Checking and Inspection The box may be inspected and cleaned from September to March when there are no breeding birds and great care should be taken not to disturb breeding birds from spring to summer. Other species which may use your kestrel nest box include tawny owls, pigeons, jackdaws or possibly small owls or barn owls.
