Loxia curvirostra is the scientific name. Loxia comes from the Greek and means "bent sideways". Curviostra means "bent beak".
As the name suggests, the lesser crossbill has a characteristic crossed bill. This is a large finch with a split tail that lives in coniferous forests. The male is brick red while the female is olive green. The bill is used to pry seeds from cones.
