About the pecking chick

The domestic chicken is descended from the red jungle fowl, the ancestor of all domestic chicken breeds. Chickens are active animals with an intense curiosity that drives them to explore their surroundings. Scratching, pecking and dust bathing are deeply ingrained in their nature. Hens are intelligent and display individual and characteristic behavior. These feathered creatures show impressive care for their chicks. The hen incubates her eggs for three weeks, after which the eggs hatch and turn into small, lively chicks.

The pecking chick is a food lover: it pecks at grass, insects, grains and bits of gravel. The gravel is needed because it cannot chew well, but the stomach muscles grind the food with the help of the gravel.
